Wine Making

June 28th, 2008 by Wine Critic

Wine making can be an incredibly fun and enjoyable process, and so if it is something that you have never participated in or heard of before, it is definitely something you are going to want to learn about.

Getting Started

There are two basic ways that you can make wine. One is to use a kit, and this is an inexpensive and low risk way to get into wine making, meaning that it is perfect for beginners. Then the second way is to use real grapes and this is much more challenging and expensive but at the same time offers you the reward of knowing that you made a batch of real wine all by yourself.

The first step in actually making the wine is fermentation. This is one of the most important steps in terms of the flavor and color of the wine, and so you really need to make sure that you get it right. Fermentation requires an incredibly controlled process involving temperature, a proper mix of good and bad yeasts, and methods to prevent oxidation and to treat the skins and pulp which float on the top of the juice.

Clarification is the next step in wine making, and this is the process which involves the removal of the suspended materials such as the skins and yeast cells in order to eliminate cloudiness in the wine. There are six procedures that are involved in this step, which are: fining, filtration, centrifugation, refrigeration, ion exchange and heating.

Aging during wine making is also incredibly important, as this is what really improves the quality of the wine by reducing overall acidity and by enhancing the flavor, clarity and aroma compounds.

Remember that if this is your first time wine making you are most likely going to have a bit of difficulty, and the wine is definitely not going to come out tasting and looking as good if it would if you had more experience. However the more you practice and the more batches of wine you make the better you are going to become, and before you know it you will be a true wine making connoisseur.

This is an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding hobby, and if you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself at home, then there are quite a few different companies that you can go to which will supply you with both the ingredients and the know-how that you will need in order to make wine properly.
