California’s ros&eacutes have often been a sideline for wineries - something summery, often lightly sweet, that they could sell quickly while they waited for their Cabernet to age in the barrel. Subio is different. While visiting France, they were inspired by the dry, food-friendly ros&eacutes of the Southern Rhone when they came home to California, they sought out the right grapes to re-create the style. The 2006 is a blend of Carignane, Grenache, Syrah, and Viognier the blending encourages a mix of red fruit flavors, especially red currant, raspberry, and strawberry. It’s medium-bodied and dry, with a round mouthfeel and a clean, crisp finish. Serve chilled.

Champagne keeps getting more and more popular - people are discovering that bubbles are for more than just celebrations. At the same time, vineyard land in Champagne is maxed out, limiting the supply of grapes, and other parts of the world are proving that they, too, can make top-flight bubbly. The North Coast of California, for example: the cooler valleys and fog-chilled coasts make for the perfect conditions for sparkling wine. The Stonehouse Brut 2001 shows what they can achieve: lots of toasty notes, pear and lemon aromas, and a smooth, soft feel to the bubbles all live up to the standard set in France.

The Sierra Foothills may not have the reputation and high prices of Napa, but its wine industry is just as old and established, dating back to the mid-1800’s. Stevenot’s 500-acre farm supports a wide variety of grapes, each one planted where it can grow best. For the Merlot, that means full, ripe flavors without getting too sweet or flabby. The 2005 shows lots of blackberry, cherry, and strawberry flavors, along with touches of toast and smoke. It’s pretty full-bodied, with firm tannins which keep the finish clean and smooth.

The floor of Napa Valley is, by-and-large, a bit too warm for Pinot Noir, which favors cooler growing areas. However, there are nooks and crannies around the valley where wind, fog drifting up from the San Francisco Bay, or north-facing slopes can put enough of a chill on things to make this picky grape happy. When that happens, you get a Pinot like this: dark fruit notes like plum, blackberry, and black raspberry, with some spicy touches of cedar and clove. It’s full-bodied, but keeps that firm mouthfeel so typical to classic Pinot.

Chardonnay, as whites go, can run the gamut form crisp and light to huge, oak-aged, and buttery. By sourcing different plots of grapes from all over Sonoma County, Silver Peak has put together a Chardonnay that falls right in the middle. It’s medium-bodied, with a bit of creaminess to its texture, but it still finished crisply. Its fruit aromas, too, extend from the tropical (mango, for example) to peach to pear. With its flexible nature, the Silver Peak Chardonnay makes a great white for parties!

The Chardonnay planted at RustRidge Ranch Vineyard in the eastern hills of Napa Valley produces flavorful,well-balanced wine. Morning and evening breezes move up and down the slopes, cooling the grapes so they don’t become overripe and drying their skins, which protects them from rot and mildew.
